A nonprofit organization that provides services and support for immigrants
Do you remember the feelings when you first arrived in the United States? As a new immigrant, I still recall the excitement mixed with nervousness on my first day. Many immigrant families move to the U.S., often facing many challenges, with hopes of providing a better life and opportunities for their children. However, language barriers make daily life challenging; simple tasks like reading mail, applying for low-income housing, and filing taxes can become overwhelming.
The Asian Pacific American Community Center (APACC), located in the Visitacion Valley area of San Francisco, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to help new immigrants to integrate into society by offering support services and cultural guidance.
About APACC
APACC was founded in 1999 by a group of Asian immigrants who saw the lack of resources and support for the Asian communities in Visitacion Valley, making it difficult for immigrant families to thrive. The center’s mission is to empower the community to be confident, healthy, strong, and safe through its programs and services.
Community Services Year-Round
The center offers year-round community services, including assistance with applying for food stamps, translating letters, referrals, and applications for public assistance and affordable housing. Additionally, they hold workshops on safety, health, emergency preparedness, waste management, and voter information.
Other Programs
Zero Waste Program
APACC’s Zero Waste Program educates residents on recycling and composting at home, teaching them how to sort waste correctly.
Education Program
The center offers after-school tutoring for students in grades 1 through 8, providing a safe environment for youth to learn and grow. They assist with homework, provide mentoring, and organize STEM activities, recreational events, and occasional field trips to encourage diverse learning and personal development.
Seasonal Events
The center provides tax assistance, distributes free holiday food packages, and hosts an annual Christmas celebration.
Youth Summer Camp
The summer camp, for students in grades 1 to 8, runs from June to August, Monday to Friday. It provides a safe and educational space where youth can explore San Francisco and its communities, fostering social and emotional growth. Lunch is provided as part of the program.
