Wine Tasting and Ostrich Feeding: A Perfect Family Day in Sunol

The San Francisco Bay Area was once home to two well-known ostrich farms: Golden Gate Ostrich Farm and Gilroy Ostrich Farm. However, both of these attractions have become part of history. Golden Gate Ostrich Farm closed shortly after its opening in 1913, and Gilroy Ostrich Farm ceased operations in 2022. These farms once offered visitors the chance to interact closely with ostriches, including feeding and learning about these large flightless birds.

Despite the closure of these specialized ostrich farms, animal enthusiasts in the Bay Area still have the opportunity to interact with these unique creatures. Located in Sunol, Elliston Vineyards offers an unexpected surprise for visitors—feeding ostriches while enjoying wine tasting.

Founded by former San Francisco Police Chief Henry Hiram Elliston in the late 19th century, Elliston Vineyards in Sunol brings new delights to its visitors. The vineyard is known for its mansion with 17 rooms, featuring 32-inch thick blue sandstone walls and elegant stone arches, and it has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This historic winery not only retains its unique architectural style but also integrates new cultural elements.

The current owner, Chinese entrepreneur Kenny Zhao, has infused new vitality into the century-old mansion by skillfully blending Chinese and Western cultures. Zhao has successfully merged Chinese culture with American wine culture, adding unique charm to the winery. He has preserved the historical appearance of the winery while showcasing his collection of antiques, imbuing the historic estate with new cultural significance.

Elliston Vineyards is renowned for its diverse wines, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, and Chardonnay, among others. Visitors can taste a variety of high-quality wines while enjoying the magnificent natural scenery.

The most striking feature is the ostrich enclosure within the vineyard, providing a unique experience for families. Parents can enjoy wine tasting while allowing their children to observe and feed these fascinating birds up close, adding joy and educational value to family outings.

For those seeking a richer experience, Elliston Vineyards will host a special event on September 7th from 1 PM to 6 PM. The "Bay Area Wonders Experience Day: Food, Wine, and Music Moon Festival" will be held at this elegant, classical century-old winery. This event will blend Eastern and Western cultures, featuring a perfect pairing of wine and Chinese cuisine, mooncake tasting, historical mansion tours, and live music performances. Hosted by KTSF's "Bay Area Wonders" host Jiayu Jeng, this event is sure to be one of the most unique and celebratory cultural events in the Bay Area this year.

With the disappearance of traditional ostrich farms, Elliston Vineyards offers a unique alternative for Bay Area residents and visitors. Here, people can enjoy the fun of interacting with ostriches while tasting premium wines. Whether it's a family outing or a gathering with friends, this winery, which combines history, culture, food, and nature, offers an unforgettable experience. Especially during festive events, where Eastern and Western cultures are perfectly blended, visitors can enjoy a rich and colorful sensory experience. Elliston Vineyards not only continues the Bay Area's connection with ostriches but also pioneers a new form of leisure, inviting everyone to come and explore.
