A Historical Overview

Sunol's history dates back to the mid-19th century when it was part of Don Antonio Suñol's land. The community began to take shape in 1871 with the establishment of its first post office. After several name changes, the town finally settled on the name Sunol in 1920. The town’s growth is closely linked to Thomas Foxwell Bachelder, who sold land in 1884, paving the way for Sunol’s expansion.

However, what truly put Sunol on the map was an extraordinary event in 1981. In that year's mayoral election, a black Labrador mix named Bosco defeated two human opponents to become the town's honorary mayor. Bosco served for 13 years until his death in 1994, bringing endless joy and conversation to the town.

Bosco’s "political career" even garnered international attention. In 1990, China's official newspaper, the People's Daily, reported Bosco’s story, describing it as an example of the failures of American democracy.
