"Cherry Picking Guide: Unlocking Cherry Delights in the Bay Area!"

Updated: Jun 20

Cherry season is here again! How can you miss out on experiencing one of the Bay Area's traditions: cherry picking! Kicking off the season is G&S Farm, offering the early ripening variety Tioga, developed in California in recent years. Tioga cherries have a refreshing taste, with a hint of sweetness, a touch of tartness, and plenty of juiciness. Since it's the first week, the cherries might not be fully ripe yet, but there won't be too many people initially. If you can't wait to taste cherries or want to avoid crowds, this Saturday is the perfect time to head out!

Most U-pick farms don't require admission fees, but some may charge for parking. After picking cherries, you'll weigh them and pay accordingly, typically priced at $4 per pound, though rates vary by farm. The farms provide buckets for collecting cherries and ladders for reaching higher branches. Pro tip: Cherries exposed to sunlight tend to be sweeter, so look for sun-kissed ones while picking.

With the weather heating up recently, it's essential to bring plenty of water and remember sun protection when going cherry picking. Many orchards prohibit pets and bringing large bags or coolers, so be sure to check the regulations of each orchard before heading out to avoid disappointment!
