Join Asia Society Northern California on July 18 from 4:30PM- 6:30PM to hear from our past Game Changer Honorees about their trailblazing work in their respective fields. Asia Game Changer West Awards are bestowed to individuals, organizations, and movements that have inspired, enlightened, and shown true leadership in areas that reflect Asia Society’s core pillars of policy and business, technology and innovation, arts, culture, and education.
We will be joined by Russell Jeung, co-founder of Stop AAPI Hate, Professor of Asian American Studies at San Francisco State University, and 2022 Asia Game Changer West Honoree; Tammy Ma, Lead of the Inertial Fusion Energy Initiative, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and 2023 Asia Society Game Changer West Honoree; and Zheng Chongbin, San Francisco Bay Area Artist, and 2021 Asia Society Game Changer West Honoree. This conversation will be moderated by Kiki Kapany, CEO and Executive Producer at Kikim Media.

SPEAKER BIOSKiki Kapany is the CEO and Executive Producer at Kikim Media, where all of the productions are guided by our fundamental commitment to fairness and accuracy and by the conviction that a true story, honestly told, can change lives. She is produced Our Beautiful Planet, a series of ten videos about climate change that will air on PBS in 2021. Kapany’s additional productions include Silicon Valley: The Untold Story (2018), a three-hour series about the cultural, technological and intellectual history of Silicon Valley for Discovery’s Science Channel, as well as two films based on Michael Pollan’s best-selling books, the Emmy-nominated film In Defense of Food (2015), critically acclaimed at over 20 film festivals around the world, and The Botany of Desire (2009).
Born in Shanghai, Zheng Chongbin lives and works in San Francisco Bay Area. Throughout his career of three decades, Zheng has held the classical Chinese ink tradition and Western pictorial abstraction in productive mutual tension. A resident of the San Francisco Bay Area for over three decades, Zheng is inspired by the region's distinctive atmospheric and environmental effects and rich ecologies, as well as by the California light and space movement. Zheng’s work can be found in the collections, among others, of the British Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, and more.
Dr. Russell Jeung is Professor of Asian American Studies at San Francisco State University and the author of books and articles on race and religion. He's written Family Sacrifices: The Worldviews and Ethics of Chinese Americans (Oxford U Press, 2019) among more. In March 2020, Dr. Jeung co-founded Stop AAPI Hate with Chinese for Affirmative Action and the Asian Pacific Policy and Planning Council. It tracks incidents of COVID-19 discrimination to develop policy interventions and long-term solutions to racism. Stop AAPI Hate was awarded the 2021 Webby Award for "Social Movement of the Year." In 2021, Dr. Jeung was named as TIME 100 most influential persons and among the Bloomberg 50 for his global impact.
Dr. Tammy Ma is the Lead for the Inertial Fusion Energy Initiative at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, where she leads the team to develop a clean, limitless, safe energy source of the future by recreating stars in the laboratory. She is the recipient of a Presidential Early Career Award for Science and Engineering (PECASE) and currently sits on the Fusion Energy Sciences Advisory Committee (FESAC), providing advice to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science on complex scientific and technological issues related to fusion energy and plasma research. She was a member of the team that achieved fusion ignition in December 2022 at the National Ignition Facility, demonstrating more energy from fusion than the laser energy used to drive it, for the first time in history.
